The Nicest Things Are Made for Joy, With Love

Admin • Corporate, Golfing • October 1, 2026

The mowers start at 4:40am, headlights sweeping the dew. By the time the first group reaches the opening tee, nine greenkeepers have touched every hole — and none of them will ever take a bow for it.

A morning on the rota

Cutting at 3.2 millimetres, rolling the tournament greens, moving every tee marker a measured stride, raking eighty bunkers by hand. The rota is timed to the minute so play never waits behind a machine.

The details members notice

  • Hole locations — six easy, six testing, six brutal, rotated daily and logged for fairness.
  • Halfway hut flowers — cut from the estate beds, changed with the seasons.
  • Quiet machines — electric mowers before 7am near the lodges, always.

Why it matters on your card

True surfaces mean putts hold their line and handicaps mean something. When members travel to opens elsewhere, they tell us the greens gave them an edge. That is the whole point of the 4:40 start.

"Nobody applauds a mower at dawn. The applause is a putt that goes in straight."

Next time you repair a pitch mark — and you will — know that eleven people prepared the ground for it before breakfast.
